Chapter Ten

Vivian opened her eyes as Laurence laid her down on the sand near the warmth of the fire. She groaned, feeling so weak. What had happened? The memory slowly surfaced.

Harold must have sent that thing to harm her and Laurence. Guilt gripped her heart. Laurence didn’t deserve any of this. She’d brought him into the middle of her toxic baggage, and now it was seeping out onto him.

She gripped her forehead, the ache pounding in her brain, and she groaned again. Laurence turned to her and knelt beside her, lifting the water jug to her lips. She drank slowly and then wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.

“Thanks,” she said meekly.

“I should be thanking you,” he said gruffly. “What the hell was that thing? Is this island haunted?”

“I don’t think so,” she said. “There are things I haven’t told you about what is going on here. I never should have gotten anyone else involved. It’s the reason your boat is gone. It’s the reason the bear attacked. I’m so sorry, Laurence. You’ve helped me so much. You don’t deserve this.”

“What are you talking about?”

“My ex-husband, the psycho blood witch. He’s trying to prevent me from casting a spell to keep him from reclaiming me. That’s the whole reason I needed to come get the black myrtle leaves in the first place. He cast a binding spell on me when we were first married. There is no way to break it. This spell is the only way to prevent him from taking me back to Chicago and use me in his twisted blood magic.”

“Blood magic. Binding spell… I don’t want any part of that.”

“I know. I get it.” She looked away forlornly, a tear sliding down her cheek. “I don’t blame you. I don’t want any part of it either.”

“I like you, Vivian, but witch magic is dangerous. I wish you’d told me why you needed to come out here.”

“I’m sorry.” She drew her knees up to her chest and looked out at the sea. Her growing feelings for Laurence were stupid and delusional. She was damaged goods. Even if she believed that shifters and witches could be together, her ex-husband would be too much for any man to handle. Maybe this was the karma that Marietta had been talking about. Even if she got rid of Harold, he would always come back to haunt her.

“Don’t cry,” he said, putting his hand on her knee. “I hate seeing a woman cry.”

He ran his hand up her thigh and then brushed the hair out of her face. The animal glow inside his eyes burned brightly and Vivian could see his features morph ever so slightly.

He leaned over her in a rush, pushing her down onto the dry sand. Vivian’s eyes grew wide with shock. One minute ago, he’d been telling her how dangerous she was.

“You don’t want to do this, Laurence,” she said, breathlessly as she ran her hands up his taut sides. He’d only put on his boxers and she could feel his hard length press between her legs.
